The
film mixes elements of ancient and contemporary Rome such as architecture,
cars, guns and clothing. A young boy is playing war safe at home when,
following a loud explosion, he is taken to a gloomy Colosseum, where a
triumphant march is taking place in honour of Andronicus, who has beaten the
Goths.
After burying the corpses and sacrificing the eldest son of Tamora, the queen of the Goths, the scene shifts to the EUR neighbourhood. The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, a piece of architecture from the fascist era which is also known as the Square Colosseum, is the setting for the austere residence of Emperor Saturninus, as if to compare the totalitarianism of the emperor with the fascist dictatorship, which borrowed heavily from the iconography of Ancient Rome. Another famous location of the film is the Archaeological Park of Villa Adriana in Tivoli.
