The film shows a Calabria composed of sun-drenched landscapes, with centuries-old olive trees, prickly pear plants and ancient small churches, accompanied by the sound of archaic tarantelle played on drums and mouth organs.
The background for the impossible love between the peasant Peppe and noble Femia, played by Raf Vallone and Marina Berti, is the imaginary village of Gralimi, actually Orti, a hilltop neighbourhood of Reggio Calabria on the slopes of the Aspromonte range. Some scenes, however, were shot in Taormina, including those of the convent where Femia finds refuge which is the Biblioteca di Sant’Agostino.
