Where it was filmed 'Romulus'

Shot entirely in proto-Latin, the series Romulus follows the path to the conception of the legend of Romulus and Remus and the birth of Rome, meticulously recreating 8th century BCE Lazio. The stories of three young people, Yemos (Andrea Arcangeli), Wiros (Francesco di Napoli) and Ilia the Vestal (Marianna Fontana), unfold in this primitive, brutal, strongly mystical world. Numerous exterior locations were chosen to recreate this world; rivers, swamps and woods, from the pristine areas of Lazio.

Shooting took place throughout the Archaeological Park of Vulci, the ancient Etruscan city in the territory of Canino and Montalto di Castro, in the province of Viterbo. In particular, the crew shot near the La Cuccumella, an Etruscan funeral monument dating to the 7th-6th centuries BCE and the laghetto del Pellicone, a canyon carved out of the volcanic rock by the river Fiora. The production built the earth and clay huts of the Gabi tribe near the Solfatara di Pomezia and the city of Alba Longa on the via Pontina.

The last scenes in season 1 which see Ilia reborn in search of revenge for her brother’s death were shot in the grotta dell’Arco in Bellagra, which serves as the dwelling for the priest of Mars. In addition to stalagmites and stalactites, the cave conserves prehistoric rock paintings of anthropomorphic figures. Scenes were also shot near the Pertuso cave in Affile (Rome) and the natural cavities of Pastena (Frosinone) and Roiate (Rome).

For season 2, the production chose the disused quarry of Colle Largo, on via Romana in Guidonia, as the setting for the new city founded by Yemos and Wiros, consecrated to the goddess Rumina. But the existence of the future Rome, founded on principles of welcome and freedom, is sure to provoke rivalry with the king of the Sabines as he fights to prove himself.

Plot

Yemos, Wiros, Ilia, the group of Ruminales and the inhabitants of Alba have settled in what was once Velia, consecrating it as a free, independent kingdom with the name of Rome. Tito Tazio, the young king of the Sabines, fearing the expansion of the kingdom at his border, invites the two kings to a ritual that reveals itself to be an ambush. In this inhospitable land, Yemos and Wiros kidnap the king’s beloved Sabine priestesses. When the Sabines invade Lazio to claim the women, Yemos and Wiros stand firm but their fellowship starts to show the signs of an imminent crisis in the face of war and destruction, there can only be one king in Rome. Who will take the name of Romulus?
