Where it was filmed 'La chimera'

Shooting on Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera began in early 2022 in various areas in Tuscia, starting in Tarquinia which provided many locations including piazza della Tribuna and the rock beneath Santa Maria in Castello, among many others.  There was also a week’s shoot in Civitavecchia, on Frasca beach and at Torre Valdaliga Nord, beneath the power station, where the industrial area was used for scenes with vintage cars. Various municipalities in the province of Viterbo provided locations, including the tiny centre of Blera, established between the VIII and VII centuries BCE, the era when the numerous necropolises in the surroundings that make it famous were built.

La chimera also shot in areas of Southern Tuscany, in particular the area and town of Montalcino. Also in Tuscany, scenes were set on the disused Asciano-Monte Antico train track, known as the “Val d’Orcia railway”, and in the villages of Monte Amiata Scalo and Torrenieri, the setting for the opening scenes of the film where the main character Arthur (Josh O'Connor) reunites with his gang of grave robbers after being arrested.

Plot
In the 1980’s, a young English archaeologist gets caught up in the world of “tombaroli / grave robbers” and the clandestine trafficking of ancient artefacts. Returning to a small city on the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Arthur reunites with his motley gang of tomb raiders who steal Etruscan grave goods and archaeological wonders. Arthur has a gift that he offers the gang: he can sense emptiness. The emptiness of the earth beneath his feet which hold the traces of a past world. The same emptiness that has left him with the memory of a lost love, Beniamina. In an adventurous journey amidst the dead and the living, woods and cities, parties and solitude, the intertwined destinies of these characters unfold, each in search of the chimera.
