Rio delle Foglie is a huge canyon, adventure park, educational centre and a superb natural monument, in which geological treasures and a striking variety of scenery illustrate the evolution of the earth and its inhabitants from an unusual perspective.
The Rio delle Foglie Canyon in this Geological Park in the South Tyrol allows visitors to take a peek inside the mountains, into a world of stone. The canyon is the result of crumbling and erosion of the rock. Since the Ice Age, some 15,000 years ago, and for several geological eras thereafter, the Rio delle Foglie canyon gradually shifted down below ground level for a stretch of 8 kilometres, reaching a depth of 400 m. It was then uncovered layer after layer, with 10 billion tonnes of stones removed and transported to the Adige Valley, so that today visitors can observe the individual layers one by one, like pages in a book.
