Castel del Monte is a fortified Medieval village with just under 500 inhabitants in the Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains National Park, located south of Campo Imperatore at a height of 1,345 metres above sea level, a stone’s throw from the cities of L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo. Monuments of interest include a handful of churches in the historic centre and the characteristic tower houses, traditional dwellings. Castel del Monte’s location has made it a strategic point for the transhumance economy.
