Matterhorn – Monte Cervino

Frazione Breuil Cervinia, 26, 11021 Breuil-Cervinia AO, Italy

Description

The unmistakable pyramidal outline of the 4,478m tall Matterhorn (Italian: monte Cervino) is recognised the world over. It stands on the border between Italy and Switzerland, looming over the other peaks in the Pennine Alps and the villages of Breuil-Cervinia (Italy) and Zermatt (Switzerland).
It was the last of the great Alpine peaks to be conquered: by Edward Whymper on 14 July 1865 from the Swiss side and three days later by Jean-Antoine Carrel on the Italian side. A cable car leads from Breuil-Cervinia to the Plateau Rosa skiing area which has a panoramic view over the surroundings.
The area of the Matterhorn, a very popular tourist destination, also comprises the municipalities of Torgnon, La Magdeleine (with typically Alpine architecture), Chamois (accessible only by cable car or on foot) and Valtournenche (whose territory includes Breuil-Cervinia and its vast ski resort).
