According to tradition, the Torre del Barbarossa in Acquapendente (VT) is the last vestige of the Castle of Frederick I (Federico Barbarossa) which was destroyed in 1166 during a popular uprising.
It is composed of three orders: a pyramid-shaped base, a large clock face probably dating to the 16th century in the middle and an upper order with a crenelated belfry created during the 1800s when the building was extended and adapted.
A public park spreads out around the tower with a range of tree species, including the domestic and maritime pine, cypresses, horse chestnuts and Lebanese cedars, replacing the original 19th century orchards and vineyards. The treetops are often inhabited by squirrels.
