The caves of Scurati (Scurati, Parpaglione, Mangiapane) near the hamlet of Scurati in the municipality of Custonaci (TP) are prehistoric settlements transformed into a miniscule rural village with low houses huddled together, cobbled streets and a chapel.
The largest and most impressive, the Mangiapane Cave, takes its name from a family who lived there. It is a magnificent giant cavity (60m high, 70m deep) featuring small constructions built by residents (fishermen, farm workers, local livestock breeders) for use as dwellings, warehouses and animal shelters since the beginning of time.
Incisions on the cave walls date to the Upper Palaeolithic Period. Abandoned by the shepherds who used it to make cheese, the cave is today a tourist destination. A tableaux-vivant nativity scene is organized every year. The episode The Snack Thief from the TV series Inspector Montalbano was shot in the cave.
