Ventimiglia is a Ligurian municipality in the province of Imperia, also known as “The Eastern Door of Italy”, “The Border City” and the “Flowered Door of Italy”. Standing on the border with France and in close proximity to the Côte d’Azur, it is an important crossroads for tourism and the economy.
Divided by the Fiume Roia, which flows into the Ligurian Sea, the city has two sides: the medieval Ventimiglia Alta and the more modern left bank. There are two Romanesque buildings in Ventimiglia Alta: the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, and the older Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Palaces from the 1500s line the Via Garibaldi in the historical centre, the Teatro Comunale with an art deco facade which houses the ancient Aprosiana Library and the Loggia del Parlamento, known as the Magazzino dell’Abbondanza, of Provencal architecture.
Another place of interest is the Hanbury Botanical Gardens on the Promontory della Mortola. The 18-hectare park, which hosts thousands of tropical and sub tropical botanical species, surrounds a villa and an English garden. The caves of the archaeological site of Balzi Rossi, in the hamlet of Grimaldi near the French border, have yielded numerous Stone Age artefacts.
