The Gran Sasso d’Italia is the tallest mountain range in the central Apennines, situated across the provinces of L’Aquila, Teramo and Pescara. It is part of the protected area of the Parco nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga which safeguards extremely rare examples of flora and fauna including the Apennine edelweiss and the Orsini Viper. The two mountainsides present different scenarios: the Western face in L’Aquila is steep but mostly grassy, while that to the East, in the province of Teramo, is steeper, barer and rockier.
The range measures over 50km in length and 15km in breadth between its most distant points, Passo delle Capannelle in the North West and Gole di Popoli in the South East. The highest point (2,912m) is on the Corno Grande, whose four slopes enclose the Glacier del Calderone.
