Montefiascone (VT) is located on the ancient via Cassia, in the Volsini mountain range, enjoying a panoramic position over lake Bolsena.
Numerous Etruscan and Roman traces demonstrate the ancient origins of the village that developed in the Middle Ages and enjoyed periods of great splendour due to the frequent presence of high-ranking Church officials who fled Rome at the approach of invaders.
The Church of St. Andrew is one of the town’s oldest, positioned adjacent to the early city wall, while the Church of St. Flavian is the most recognisable monument in the city with two overlapping churches; the Castle of Montefiascone, also known as the Rocca dei Papi, was a Papal residence for centuries offering shelter from the sieges of Rome. Also of visual importance is the Cathedral of St Margaret whose great cupola was built to honour a young woman who lived and died for her Christian faith.
In 1111, thanks to Charles V, Baron Defuk discovered the local variety of grape, a moscatello he named “EST! EST!! EST!!!”.
