Trastevere is the 13th and largest rione of Rome. Its name derives from the Latin trans Tiberim, or "over the Tiber" as it developed on the opposite (right) bank of the river to the earliest city nucleus. The area retains many of its original characteristics and features buildings of different types, with houses, small shops and trattorias, dotted along an intricate system of alleyways.
The heart of the neighbourhood is piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, with the Basilica of Santa Maria which features medieval mosaics and frescoes. Other places of worship include: the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, a fine example of sacred Roman architecture; the Basilica of San Crisogono, one of the oldest in Rome; the Church of Santa Maria della Scala, with adjoining monastery; and the Church of San Francesco a Ripa, resting place of Giorgio de Chirico, which houses The Ecstasy of the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Significant places include piazza Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, dedicated to the dialect poet of Rome, and piazza Trilussa with the Acqua Paola fountain commissioned by Pope Paul V Borghese.
Trastevere also features a Renaissance jewel, Villa Farnesina, with frescoes by Raphael.
