Fort Sommo Alto was used to watch over the Coe Pass and the Malga Melegna Plain. Smaller than Fort Serrada, it was built as an intermediary outpost so as to be able to watch over the stretch of land between Fort Cherle and Fort Serrada.
It was made up of three blocks: the casemate block with its two revolving armoured domes for 10cm howitzers, a revolving dome for keeping watch, and a fixed dome for two machine guns used to defend the front of the gorge, which had no trench. The other two blocks, connected to the first by underground tunnels, were used for close combat and were armed with machine guns in fixed domes and armoured casemates. During the war, the fort managed to avoid heavy bombing, remaining almost completely intact until the end of the conflict.
