San Martino di Castrozza (1,487m above sea level) owes its origins to an ancient religious institution, the hospice of Saints Martino and Giuliano, which welcomed in wayfarers passing through the Rolle Pass heading from Primiero to the Fiemme Valley and vice versa.
Today the only thing left of the hospice is the Church of San Martino, with its Romanesque bell tower. Visitors are greeted by the majestic sight of dense woodland and the rocky spires of the Pala Group, which take on a pinky hue at sunset.
The town is located in the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Natural Park, a place of rare beauty that has been protected for over 30 years. With its picturesque, simple and elegant style, it has inspired poets and musicians of the likes of Arthur Schnitzler and Richard Strauss.
