The main setting for the film is the seaside house belonging to Nena (Domenique Sanda), on the Ostia coast, where her extended family gathers and, as often happens, everyone talks but no one really listens.
The apartment is in a historic residential building in via di San Fiorenzo near lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi, which can be seen from the windows. Here the impossible love story begins between Paco, a peacock belonging to Alma (Carolina Michelangeli), and the dove in a painting, which becomes a mirror for everyone present to reflect their feelings.
The entire film, which the director called a short journey into the intimacy and authenticity of human beings, is set in Ostia, Rome’s beach neighbourhood, and features: the coastal road and beach, piazzale Magellano, via delle Quinqueremi and the broken dock behind the former Colonia Marina Vittorio Emanuele III, near lungomare Paolo Toscanelli.

On a winter's day, Nena brings her family together to celebrate her birthday. Everyone is there: her husband Umberto; her son Vito and his wife Adelina and their child Alma; her daughter Caterina and her ex-boyfriend Manfredi with his new girlfriend Joana; cousin Isabella; her housekeeper Lucia and her daughter Grazia. And then there is Paco, Alma's peacock. While waiting for a lunch that will never arrive, Paco falls in love with a little dove in a painting. An impossible love that shakes the whole family: everybody is pushed to reflect on their true feelings and on what remains and what is gone forever.
