Where it was filmed 'Where life begins'

The Zelnik, an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish family from Aix-Le-Bains, spend time in Southern Italy every year to harvest citrons as ancient legend holds that God scattered the fruit in the region. The large family is hosted by Elio De Angelis, a former gallery owner who has taken on the family estate after his father’s death and then was subsequently left by his wife.

This dry, burnt land is the setting for the meeting between Elio (Riccardo Scamarcio) and Esther Zelnik (Lou De Laâge), a twenty-year-old tired of the restrictions of her religion. Trapped between her love for her parents and the need for emancipation, Ester is trying to leave the Orthodox religion. Through her relationship with Elio, she comes to understand the importance of freedom and choosing one’s own path, while thanks to her, Elio experiences a peace that he had lost some time before.

The Zelniks gather in Apulia in Southern Italy: Fasano (locations include the streets of the historical centre, the square outside the church of St. John the Baptist, contrada Monte Pizzuto and Pezze di Greco), Cisternino, in the hamlet of Speziale, and Monopoli.
