Nina dei Lupi is a dystopian fantasy-thriller based on the novel by Alessandro Bertante who was nominated for the Premio Strega 2011. Following a sudden solar storm, almost every piece of electronic equipment on the planet is render unusable. That day, a newborn baby is found near a tiny village in the middle of the mountains. Nina, the name she is given, is unlike any other child and has a strong link to nature.
As global civilization crumbles following the catastrophic event, Nina’s little mountain village is the only place where the people are living in harmony with nature, using the fruits of the earth. The mountain setting is in Trentino, in particular the villages of Ala and Vallarsa where the production stayed for 7 weeks, following the Green Film protocol for sustainable production.
Seen by many as a witch because of the strange phenomena that happen around her, Nina (Sara Ciocca) finds refuge in the book of legends and myths about the Dea Reitia, “the lady of the animals” who lived in the area thousands of years before. When a band of predators attacks the village, brutally killing much of its population and enslaving the rest, adolescent Nina manages to flee into the wood where she faces a thrilling path to find herself. She learns how to survive on the mountain, live with the wolves and understand the powers she holds so that she can truly fulfill the prophecy, becoming known by everyone as “Nina dei Lupi”.
