Amichemai marks Maurizio Nichetti’s return to directing after more than twenty years. The road movie starts in Trieste where Anna (Angela Finocchiaro) lives, a passionate veterinarian whose life is spent managing the farm and the multiple family roles that require her to be, at various times: a loving wife, an affectionate daughter, an anxious mother, a patient grandmother. The death of her infirm father, Gino, offers Anna the opportunity to finally rid herself of his attentive caregiver Aysè (Serra Yilmaz) with whom she never got along. Aysè returns to Turkey with Gino's bed, left to her as an inheritance. Anna decides to accompany her on the pretext of surprising her husband (Luca Lombardi) who has been living in Bulgaria for years.
Crossing Europe in a pickup, the two women are forced to spend time together, while guarding a bed that contains many secrets. A journey of 1,500 km at 100 km/h is only 15 hours by car: three days of travel that completely change Anna's life, freeing her from all the ghosts that tied her to a marriage that ended long ago. Released from her role as caregiver/housekeeper, Aysè demonstrates a sensitivity that Anna never imagined, and, more importantly, a less submissive relationship with men that offers a "sentimental education" for a wife faithful more to an idealized memory than to a man in flesh and blood.
The Bulgarian town where Anna's husband lives is actually the hamlet of Cave del Predil, in Tarvisio (Udine), recognizable by the Church of Sant'Anna. Other locations included Marborghetto Valbruna, Torviscosa, Duino.
