Trieste border city

“Pensive and shy”, as Umberto Saba defined her, Trieste has been an important strategic harbour since the time of the ancient Romans and also the point where Western Europe meets the Centre-South. It is probably this charm that has enchanted so many writers, from Stendhal to James Joyce who claimed to have left his soul in the city. Several novelists grew up here, from Italo Svevo to Susanna Tamaro, and many directors have chosen to set their stories in the city, with its middle-European flavour, some explicitly identifying the locations, others transforming it into an imaginary place and amplifying its evocative nature.

Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia – Trieste

The piazza that welcomes all Italy

A visit to Trieste must include the iconic piazza dell’Unità d’Italia which featured in season 2 of Gomorrah as the location for the meeting which would lead to the ceasefire between the secessionist Ciro Di Marzio and Genny, son of the Savastano clan boss. Ronchi dei Legionari airport was used to shoot their arrival from Naples for the summit. The scenes were all shot at night and include footage of Porto Vecchio and Hotel Savoia, where there is a glimpse of the entrance and interiors of the room occupied by Ciro where he later has a tense meeting with Genny to clarify the situation. Renzo, main character in the episodic film Caffè, walks through the same square. A genius at creating the perfect blend of coffee, the boy leaves Italy with his girlfriend to seek his fortune in a large coffee import industry but he doesn’t find the improvement in his life he hoped for and gets involved in a theft. Piazza Unità d’Italia, the “drawing room” of Trieste, is the longest seashore square in Europe. Many important buildings surround it: palazzo della Luogotenenza austriaca, now the Prefecture headquarters; palazzo Stratti, with the historic Caffè degli Specchi; palazzo Modello, now the Municipal offices; palazzo Pitteri, the oldest building on the square; palazzo Vanoli, now a prestigious hotel; and the palazzo of the shipping company Lloyd Austriaco di Navigazione, later Lloyd Triestino, and now offices of the Regional administration.

Gru Ursus – Trieste

The place separating the living from the dead

Trieste truly fulfils its role as a border city in the TV series, La porta rossa, representing the physical limits between life and death. Here Commissioner Leonardo Cagliostro attempts to discover the identity of his killer. Disobeying the orders of his superiors, he leaves his office at the police station (created in the RAS building in Piazza della Repubblica) to go to the hiding place of the criminal known as Il Messicano (The Mexican). During the shootout that ensues, in the area of Porto Vecchio (shot in the large, disused warehouse 22), both he and the criminal are killed. As he is dying, Cagliostro has a vision of his wife Anna about to suffer the same fate. Intent on saving her, he does not cross the red door that separates the worlds of the living and the dead but stays in Trieste, ghostlike and wandering Ponte Rosso, Via del Teatro Romano and in the area of the Ursus crane on the dock of Porto Vecchio. Cagliostro’s encounter with Vanessa, the only living being able to see him, takes him to the entrance of Università di Trieste in Piazzale Europa, to the Melara neighbourhood where she lives and to the historic beach club Ausonia.

Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan – Trieste

Tornatore’s mystery story

The Sicilian director Giuseppe Tornatore chose Trieste as the setting for stories with a touch of thriller that required majestic architecture with eclectic and neoclassical touches and a grey-tuned palette. As the fictitious Velarchi, the capital city of the Friuli region was the location for most of The Unknown Woman. The film was inspired by true events linked to the trafficking of East European prostitutes and their coercion into acting as surrogate mothers. The main location is a 19th century palazzo in Viale XX Settembre: here the main character, Irene, finds work as a cleaning lady and will later become nanny to the wealthy Adacher family. Shooting on The Best Offer was more complicated and required computerized help. The villa, home to the ineffable Claire, is in Udine while the gateway to her residence is actually in Trieste, in Via Guido Corsi, and was added in post-production. A similar trick was used to add the bar facing the villa which is actually at 100 km away, in Via Giorgio Galatti. The bar is the key observation point for the main character, an auctioneer, who begins by spying on Claire and later falls in love with her. The laboratory belonging to Robert, the auctioneer’s inventor friend, is located in piazza Guglielmo Oberdan.
