When TV takes you to another time

Time travel is one of the incredible possibilities that stories have always offered. If this experience was the prerogative of novels in the past, today the baton has passed to TV series and mini-series: they have the task of enchanting viewers by proposing sophisticated period atmospheres or awakening the memories of a life gone by. Even when novelesque, the historical story keeps its shine and its viewers attached to the small screen, whether the subject matter is nobles or soldiers or stories of genius minds at work.

Catch-22 or how to escape the war

The main location of the war satire series Catch-22, produced, interpreted and co-directed by George Clooney, is the decommissioned airport of Olbia-Venafiorita, which stands in for the American airbase of Pianosa. Amidst missions, exercises, meals at the mess and hospital visits, there is also time for swimming in Capo Testa, a promontory in Northern Sardinia not far from Santa Teresa di Gallura. Another destination, close to Olbia, is Capo Ceraso, a promontory rising between the city and the island of Tavolara whose rocks and Mediterranean undergrowth are guarded from above by fighter planes. The young soldiers spend their leave in a brothel in Rome: the historical centre of Viterbo, main city in the Tuscia area, served for the exteriors of Rome in 1944, in particular the porticos of piazza del Plebiscito where Hugh Laurie sits at a table in a bar. The little squares of Sutri (VT) were used for Bologna which the Americans are sure they have liberated.

Friendship is stronger than anything

Based on the quartet by Elena Ferrante, the TV series My Brilliant Friend, set in Naples in the Fifties, focuses on the friendship between Elena and Lila. Elena and Lila’s world is limited to the buildings of the poor neighbourhood where they live and which they have never left: the Rione Luzzatti, in the eastern suburbs of Naples. The neighbourhood was completely recreated as a set in 20,000 sq. of the disused Saint-Gobain factory in Marcianise, outside Caserta. Off set, the adventures of the two friends used real locations. Elena sees the sea for the first time on Lungomare Caracciolo, when she goes to register for secondary school. Both the primary school, which both girls attend, and Elena’s secondary school were shot at Palazzo Gravina, which houses the Faculty of Architecture in Monteoliveto. Once school is over, Elena spends the summer on the island of Ischia. The young student disembarks on the dock of Ischia Ponte, with the Aragonese Castle in the background, to get the bus to the home of Mrs Icardo, who lives on the ancient “Via del Commercio” in the Testaccio neighbourhood in Barano d'Ischia. The sea is that of the Spiaggia dei Maronti, although the beach scenes were mostly shot near Gaeta (LT) and in lower Lazio.

Some love stories never end

Questo nostro amore is a three season TV series, set in Turin, whose time frame ranges from 1967 to 1981. The main characters are two families destined to be united by the tormented love story between their respective eldest children. The main setting for events is the city centre, with the characters interacting each episode in locations between Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the Murazzi del Po. The university protests and other events in the life of Fortunato, now a researcher, are set in the Rectorate of the Università degli Studi of Turin. Meanwhile, the farmhouse in the open countryside where Benedetta and Bernardo decide to move, away from their old life, is in Castelnuovo Don Bosco (AT). Despite the various changes of residence, the apartment building in Via Mazzini in Turin remains at the heart of these two families’ lives and they can’t help moving back there to feel at home.
