Vallone di Vertosan, in the municipality of Avise, is an agricultural area where larch woods alternate with glades and mountain pastures, populated by numerous species of flower, plant and animal. In addition to the wide swathe of pasture, the sunny hollow comprises lakes Dzioule and Leysser, plus Col de Bard, Col Serena and Col Citrin.
It is possible to access the valley of the village of Saint-Nicolas by following the road to the traditional village of Vens then continuing on towards Col de Joux and the small settlement of Jovençan.
Climbing up to Court de Bard, the promontory that overlooks the central valley, there is a special view over Mont Blanc and the valleys of Gran Paradiso. In addition, at the foot of Col Flassin, there is a spring of iron-rich water.
The area is suitable for mountain bikes, e-bikes and excursions. The valley is also the setting for the Bataille de Reines, a celebration typical of the region where the Reines, the queens, are cows who lock horns.
