The town of Ferentino (FR) has pre-Roman origins, traces include the Acropolis and the thick cyclopean masonry walls with 12 entrance gates. The most interesting of these are Porta Maggiore with its large arches; Porta Pentagonale whose pointed arches are similar to those in Arpino and Trinto in Greece; Porta Sanguinaria, which is the most famous and owes its name to the passage of those condemned to death on the way to the execution site.
However, during the Roman period, features were built onto the pre-existing Acropolis including the picturesque covered market with a barrel roof in Roman concrete (2nd -1st century BCE), the 3,500 seat theatre (2nd century C.E) and the thermal baths, part of which lie beneath the Church of Santa Lucia. These all indicate the splendour of the city in the Republican age which only increased in the Imperial era when its proximity to the capital and favourable climate made it the Roman nobility’s place of choice for their leisure time.
