The 19th century Paisiello Theatre situated by Porta Napoli in the heart of Lecce is a typical example of an Italian structure. Residents refer to it affectionately as the bomboniera (sweet box) for its stunning appearance and small size. Rebuilt in 1872, the theatre has refined decorations made by Neapolitan masters. Three rows of boxes crown the stalls in a horseshoe shape, with reliefs, gilding and red velvet. Behind the neoclassical façade is an elegant foyer with niches holding busts of Giovanni Paisiello, musician for whom the theatre is named, and Leonardo Leo. The theatre houses a valuable piano that was owned by the tenor Tito Schipa.
