Sassolungo is a massif in the Western Dolomites, which separates the Gardena Valley (in the north) from the Fassa Valley (in the south) and the Sella (in the east) from the Catinaccio (in the west).
On the north-western side of Sassolungo is the Alpe di Siusi Valley. At 3181 m, Sassolungo is the highest of the mountains in the group it is part of, the peaks of which form a circle closed on all sides except to the north west. Within the circle rises up the little Spallone del Sassolungo, thus making it look as if the group closes in on a sort of inner courtyard.
