Sulmona (AQ) is a refined, elegant, romantic and vivacious city in the heart of Abruzzo, set in a valley enclosed by imposing mountains. Its architectural treasures include: the Church of Santa Maria della Tomba, the Cathedral of San Panfilo with crypt, the Church and Palace of the Santissima Annunziata, San Francesco della Scarpa and its beautiful Rotonda, the del Vecchio, Sant’Agata and Japasseri Fountains, Porta Napoli, Palazzo Tabassi and other noble buildings.
A medieval aqueduct with pointed arches crosses Piazza Maggiore like a lace band of white stone. The statue of a thoughtful Ovid, a native son of Sulmona, dominates Piazza XX Settembre which is filled with historical cafes. In the main thoroughfare, the Corso, and the ancient alleyways are shops selling sugared almonds and other local delicacies. There are also areas of green, like the municipal park and the luxuriant Parco fluviale. The Easter rituals of Sulmona are particularly evocative as are the summer festivities including the Giostre cavalleresche (Jousting tournament).
Monte Morrone, its hermitages, archaeological site of the Temple to Hercules Curinus and the majestic Abbey of Santo Spirito watch over the city, passing stories and legends of Ovid and Pope Celestine V on to the visitor.
