Industrie Fluviali is located in the Ostiense neighbourhood of Rome. The structure is part of the Sonnino complex built in the early 1900s as a wool factory and spreads out over approx. 2,000m2 articulated as a sophisticated cultural ecosystem of co-working spaces, bistrot and terrace with a view over the Gazometro. All the areas are resolutely free of mobility barriers.
A wool factory for almost all the 20th century, the building was entirely restructured in the early 2000s with the aim of creating office space. The work did not change its appearance and focussed on the architectural elements characteristic of the old wool washing area, e.g. the exposed ceiling vaults, open spaces, terraces, old heating system, and enphaszied its industrial nature, e.g. the air recycling system is in full view.
The area is managed by Pingo, an organization with decades of experience in non-profit social-cultural projects. Through emphasis on the history of the wool factory, demonstrated in the photographs hanging on the walls, Pingo has created a space that is strongly connected to the neighbourhood and the Tiber River. This is where the name Industrie Fluviali comes from, a reality in constant movement and operation, interconnected with the area where it is situated, just metres from the river and one of Rome’s former most important river ports.
