The Regional Nature Reserve of Lake Doberdò and Lake Pietrarossa is located on the western edge of the Karst plateau and features two karst depressions partially filled by lakes, separated by a ridge.
Lake Doberdò is one of the few examples of a karst lake in Europe. The level of its water varies according to the flow from the Vipacco and Isonzo rivers.
The natural environment is striking: the lake ecosystem contrasting with the aridity of the surrounding karst environment.
A thin strip of riparian forest on the shore of lake Doberdò comprises black poplar and other tall trees which offer excellent refuge for birds, such as the rare lesser spotted woodpecker. It is also home to many mammals: from common species, such as the roe deer, to the rare and hard to find, such as the golden jackal.
The reserve also hosts the archaeological site of a Bronze Age fort (ca. 2000 - ca. 1000 BC). The ancient village, defended by a dry-stone encircling wall, provides evidence of the first forms of housing in the Karst plateau, dating to the protohistoric era.
