Abbey of Rosazzo

Abbazia di Rosazzo / Badie di Rosacis, Piazza Abbazia, Rosazzo, Manzano, UD, Italia

Description

The Abbey of Rosazzo is located in an isolated spot north east of Manzano on the eastern hills of Friuli, about 20km from Udine and 12km from the border with Slovenia.
The thousand-year-old abbey, whose origins are not entirely clear, has been a connecting point between east and west throughout the past and still is today, its geographical position providing a place where different cultures can meet and interact.
Built in the year 1000, the Romanesque Abbey church – dedicated to St Peter the Apostle – bears the signs of reconstruction work in the past with architectural elements from different eras (late middle ages, 16th century, 19th century).
A simple structure with a symmetrical layout of three naves, the façade presents a double window likely of Benedictine origin, like the other two that can be seen in the cloister. It houses frescoes by Francesco India, also known as “il Moro” and “Torbido”, dating to 1535, which have been restored.  More recent are the late-18th century altars (by sculptors Giovanni and Giuseppe Mattiussi of Udine) and the statues decorating the church.
Today the Abbey hosts cultural events organized by the Fondazione Abbazia di Rosazzo, including Easter and Christmas concerts, Rosazzo da Rosa, art exhibitions and the “colloqui dell’abbazia” meetings.
