Locations

The ‘Avanti Savoia’ chapter is set in the Dolomites, in the autumn of 1918. The map – which is erroneously named ‘Monte Grappa’ although it is set on the Falzarego Pass/Lagazuoi – gives the player control of an Ardito (a special infantry branch of the Royal Italian Army).
The motto of the Arditi, “O la vittoria, o tutti accoppati” (“We either win, or we all die”), characterises the two stages of the mission well. In the first stage, the player faces off with Austro-Hungarian troops near the fictitious Church of Sant’Anastasia. During the battle in the air, the Sass de Stria mountain is clearly recognisable. The in-game map also features Lake Valparola. The game caused controversy when it was accused by the Italian National Alpini Association of turning an event that should have never been used for recreation into a game.

Plot

With Battlefield 1, the famous series by Electronic Arts once again takes us back to the First World War. It nonetheless does so paying careful attention to the human component of the conflict, starting with the intriguing prologue. When the player dies, they don’t start back at the beginning, but take control of another solider, while the name of the soldier who has died in battle appears on the screen. The six stories comprising the game cover different stages of the conflict, from the Battle of Cambrai to the Gallipoli Campaign. One of the stories is set in Italy.
