Europe’s largest horse racing track is located in the district of Maia Bassa, in the city of Merano. The track is 5 km long and the first race took place in 1935.
Among the most important events of the season is the Haflinger horse race on Easter Monday, and the Merano Grand Prix, a prestigious show jumping competition scheduled for the last Sunday in September. The facilities, opened in 1935, the same year in which the Grand Prix was first held, has become an important meeting for stables throughout central Europe, given that this location offers the opportunity to compete in steeplechases against the leading European teams, and also make use of prestigious track for horses trained in flat racing. In fact, there appears to be a general consensus among those in the field, who show unbiased appreciation with regard to both the geographic location (in the center of competing European countries) and the technical characteristics of the track (ideal for both steeplechases and flat racing) to be counted among the most challenging in Europe.
