Extending out into the Tyrrhenian Sea, facing the island of Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula stretches from Castellammare di Stabia to Punta Campanella, dividing the water between the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno. It takes its name from the most famous of its inhabited centres, Sorrento which is perched on an imposing cliff with a sheer drop over the sea, and conserves significant artefacts from the Classical and Medieval eras alongside Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
The Sorrento Coast is the shoreline north of the Peninsula, between Massa Lubrense and picturesque Vico Equense, today famous for its thermal waters. The picturesque landscapes of this coastal road give the area particular charm: a winding path that follows the steep, jagged coastline offers panoramas over the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and Capri, with citrus groves, vineyards and olive groves sloping gently down to the sea.
