The film was shot in Switzerland (Sils Maria, Zurich and Sankt Moritz), Germany (Berlin and Leipzig) and Italy (Alto Adige).
Sils Maria, which lends its name to the film, is a town in the Swiss Alps where the central part of the story takes place. So the film is mainly set in Switzerland, but some shots were taken in the Dolomites in Val Gardena, in particular in the area surrounding Col Raiser and the Juac refuge for the external shots (Selva di Val Gardena) and the Grödnerhof Hotel in Ortisei for the interiors. Wilhelm Melchior Sils Maria’s mountain lodge is actually Casa al Monte (Selva di Val Gardena). In a number of scenes you can see the Sassolungo, the main peak of the Sassolungo mountain range. Some scenes were also shot at the Parkhotel Laurin in Bolzano.
The guiding thread of the plot, reflecting the state of mind of the protagonist, is the picturesque meteorological phenomenon of the Maloja Snake, which really impressed the director. This snake of fog appears in Engadine, in the Maloja Pass (Switzerland) in the early hours of the morning in the autumn, and winds all the way down towards Sils, Silvaplana and Sankt Moritz. In the film we discover that it was filmed back in 1924 by German filmmaker Arnold Fanck, who made it the subject of his documentary “Das Wolkenphänomen von Maloja”.
