The developers worked with archaeologists from the Aquileia Foundation and the University of Padua, which supervised some of the excavations. By combining information already in their possession with new information provided by the archaeologists, they were able to both develop an up-to-date 3D map of the Roman city, and make detailed reconstructions of the 10 most important sites. Among them are Piazza Forense, the main hub of public life; the river port, which made the city its fortune and played an essential role in its rebirth in the centuries following the birth of Christ; the amphitheatre which, as confirmed by recent digs, has been compared to the Arena of Verona for its size and function; the majestic Domus of Tito Macro and the Fondo Cal, and last but not least, the burial ground, the Republican walls, the civil basilica and the circus.

Antica Aquileia 3D is an app designed by the Aquileia Foundation and created in 2014 by Ikon Company and Nudesign. Users can explore virtual reconstructions of sites in Aquileia during Roman times. The Friulian municipality has a prestigious past, having once been an important port on the Adriatic which saw a lot of trade, as well as a strategic fortress starting with the Roman Republic (it was initially an outpost for Caesar and was expanded under Maximian, who made it into a true city of the Empire, along with Mediolanum). Antica Aquileia 3D is a real historical and archaeological guide, which interacts with the splendour of a lost civilisation through modern digital tools and the potential for exploration afforded by video games.
