Madame Luna by Daniel Espinosa is the story of a person who has committed terrible actions due to the circumstances in which she was entangled. A woman forced to become a criminal in order to survive in the socio-economic context in which she lives.
In Italy, Madame Luna is Almaz (Meninet Abraha Teferi), a ruthless human trafficker from Eritrea who is forced by the fall of the Libyan regime to switch sides and face the dangerous journey to Italy across the Mediterranean that she has organized many times over for other men and women.
On arrival in Italy, she begins to work with a criminal organization that is skimming money off the refugee reception centre. An encounter with young Eli (Hilyam Weldemichael) forces her to confront the shadows of her past, and to choose, once again, a side.
The story was shot in Sicily and Calabria: Porto Empedocle and the seaside town of Siculiana Marina (province of Agrigento) were used for the reception centre and beach. The rest of the plot unfolds in Lamezia Terme, in particular the hamlet of San Pietro Lametino (province of Cosenza).
