Building began on the Berzieri Thermal Baths inside Palazzo Berzieri in the heart of Salsomaggiore Terme (PR), in 1912, to the design by Ugo Giusti and Giulio Bernardini with the artistic contribution of Galileo Chini. Chini, a master of art deco, included elements from the places where he had lived, including the orientalising elements of Thailand.
Inaugurated in 1923, the building is a splendid example of thermal art deco with lions’ heads on the façade, scantily-clad maidens on the lower sides of the windows and two blue lions flanking the word Thermae. The inner atrium, decorated by Giuseppe Moroni with marble ornamentation, wall paintings and plasterwork, has an imposing staircase that leads to the first floor which features frescoes by Galileo Chini.
The Centro Benessere Berzieri, where the new and the old meet in an evocative art deco atmosphere, welcomes guests to refined, elegant surroundings offering thermal waters treatments that are inspired by the philosophies of various countries. The structure includes three areas for thermal wellness in an overall capacity of about 4,000 m2. In addition to the wellness centre, there is a chemical institute with a pharmaceutical and cosmetics laboratory.
