The Gouffre des Busserailles in the municipality of Valtournanche, not far from Cervinia and lake Cignana, is a deep canyon, 104m long, 35m deep, that has been carved out of the mountain by the force of the river Marmore.
At an altitude of 1,742 m, the river plummets into the abyss which was first explored in 1865 by the Alpine guides of Valtournanche, Jean-Antoine Carrel, Victor Maquignaz and Alexandre Pellissier who were so struck by its beauty that they decided to create a structure to facilitate visits. Near the entrance, the three Marmitte dei Giganti can be admired, these are circular caves carved out of the rock by the river water. The route through the caves ends at the picturesque final waterfall about 35m in height.
