The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows is an important place of worship for the Catholic community, located in the village of Castelpetroso (IS). The Basilica was built in honour of the Virgin Mary, following the vision by two shepherdesses Serafina and Bibiana in the Cesa tra Santi area on the slopes of Monte Patalecchia.
The work by Francesco Gualandi, which started in 1890 and ended in 1975, created a neo-Gothic church that is considered part of the artistic movement known as Gothic Revival.
The tripartite façade of the Sanctuary divided by columns topped with lilies, has three portals decorated with mosaics and rose windows and is flanked by two bell towers.
Covering a surface area of 2,800m², the church has a radial floor plan with seven chapels, in representation of the number of daggers spearing the heart of Our Lady of Sorrows. Each of the six side chapels has an altar in varicoloured marble and the depiction of a Sorrow, by Amedeo Trivisonno. The 54m high dome, decorated with mosaics of the evangelists, prophets and the saints venerated in Molise, covers the central part of the church and represents the point from where the seven chapels branch off.
