The Benedictine Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella in Serramonacesca (PE) is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Abruzzo. A simple, unadorned structure in white Maiella stone, the Abbey rises from the luxuriant vegetation surrounding it and symbolically represents the link between religious history and its context. The church facade has a pitched roof with three portals and stands aside a massive, square-sided bell tower with single, double and triple arched windows. The central nave inside conserves an ancient and beautifully coloured Cosmatesque floor and an ambon featuring bas-reliefs of animal shaped figures.
The many legends surrounding the Abbey’s history increase its charm and include a founding story where two Roman patricians donate the goods needed for its construction to St Benedict himself and another which links it to Charlemagne’s victory over the Longobards.
