The set for the series moved from Gubbio to Spoleto for the ninth season onwards. Piazza Duomo is the main location in this new town. Indeed, it is home to Don Matteo’s rectory, a stone’s throw from Palazzo Bufalini (which dates back to the 16th/17th century), which provides the façade for the Carabinieri station.
Don Matteo’s church is, in actual fact, the Church of Sant-Eufemia, part of the former residence of the Lombard Dukes which later became the bishop’s residence. Not far away is the Caio Melisso Theatre, which is used in the series as the visiting room in the prison.
During his famous bicycle rides, the priest traverses several roads in the old town, including Corso Garibaldi, Via dell’Arringo, Via delle Mura, Via del Visiale and Vicolo della Basilica and, outside the city centre, the Ponte delle Torri bridge, which leads to Rocca Albornoziana, the castle that towers over the Umbrian town.
