Perugia is the ideal (and real-life) setting of this story about love and chocolate. In particular, the main location used is the Scuola del Cioccolato Perugina (cited explicitly in the film), where Mattia/Kamal attends the chocolate-making course that will allow the real Kamal to open a patisserie in Italy.
As well as Perugia, the story is set in Terni, Narni (the Manini Theatre is where the competition is announced), Orvieto and Spoleto, with some scenes filmed at the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione and in the Medieval town of Panicale.

The labourer agrees not to report Mattia, but in exchange he must attend a chocolate-making course in his place, in a blatant lie. A whole new world opens up to Mattia and he finds love.
