Steep is set in the Alps, in Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria. The settings showcase the mountains’ incomparable natural beauty. The player can explore the various locations in which they can practise their disciplines and interact with real alpine settings. Of particular interest are the special missions on which, guided by mountain spirits or the voice of the mountain itself, the player sets off in discovery of historical facts and anecdotes about the place being explored: for example, the ruins of a castle on Mount Rosa. Among the various points of interest are the steep slopes of Crote Mountain in Labie, the refuge on the Teodulo at over 3000m above sea level, the Perelli bivouac and the Valley of the White Peaks, the trails of which have some very tough slopes and used to facilitate trade between Val d’Ayas and the Canton of Valais in Switzerland.

An extreme sports video game with ski resorts to explore in free roam mode. The open world of Steep allows users to enjoy the alpine setting whilst engaging in a bit of cross-country skiing, gliding through the air in a wingsuit, pulling off daredevil manoeuvres on a snowboard and paragliding across the breathtaking landscape. Players can interact in multiplayer mode, each practising their own discipline and even competing with one another. The gameplay has been praised for its rapidity and fluidity.
