The borgo of Macugnaga, situated at the foot of the majestic eastern face of Monte Rosa (4,634m), in the Anzasca Valley on the border with Val d’Ossola was founded in the 13th century by Walser rural settlers from nearby Vallese. The most characteristic of its clusters is the Dorf, a group of cabins and ancient stables built in interlocking larch logs. Today it is a popular skiing area with the Moro (Alpe Bill-Monte Moro cablecar) and Belvedere (Alpe Burki-Belvedere chairlift) systems.
The territory features numerous water courses, an artificial reservoir and small Alpine lakes including the Lago delle Fate (Fairies’ Lake) whose emerald green waters attract numerous visitors.
