Menocchio’s village is in a picturesque corner of Carnia, between the stavoli of Orias, a small rural borgo in Val Pesarina, hamlet in Prato Carnico (Province of Udine). These buildings, typical of the mountains here and used as stables, haybarns and refuges by animal herders, take us back through the centuries to the time when the film’s titular cowherd really lived. When Menocchio becomes a target for the Church, accused of heresy, the setting moves to Castle dei Buonconsiglio in Trento which served as the Palazzo dell’Inquisizione.
