Based on the American romcom Conversations with Other Women starring Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart, Filippo Conz’s debut film tells the story of soulmates who meet after 9 years at a wedding in Tropea. Although they are both in relationships, they dive with cynical thoughtlessness into a secret tryst that soon becomes a desperate attempt to recover lost time.
The film was shot in Calabria, with 4 weeks of preparation and 4 shoot weeks, mostly at Villa Paola in Tropea, a former convent now private residence.
Legend holds that St. Francis of Paola, who came to Tropea in 1464, identified the site for the sanctuary dedicated to him on the small seaside promontory which offered, then as now, a splendid view of the Costa degli Dei. The convent was built next to the sanctuary. The work was financed by a local noble, Giovanni Adesi, who credited the saint with his survival after falling into a chasm, and changed his life, first becoming a hermit then returning to Tropea to build the convent and church in the saint’s honour. Over the years, the convent became a private residence, modified many times. The most substantial transformation took place in 1920 designed by the architect Basile di Palermo. The subsequent interventions hid the building’s beauty and the passing of time caused a range of structural damage. Today the villa is a hotel that combines exclusivity with the elegance of its history and the warmth of a family residence.
There was significant participation from local industry professionals: over 50% of the crew (mostly in the production, camera, set, costume, makeup, sound and set photography departments) was resident in the region. The film had the patronage of the Comune di Tropea and obtained grants as part of the “promotion and support of international and domestic audiovisual and film productions in the region of Calabria 2020”.
