The Rio delle Foglie gorge is an impressive canyon, adventure park, place of learning and natural monument. Geological treasures and diverse landscape forms show the development of the earth and man from unusual perspectives. This South Tyrolean geopark allows you to look inside the mountains, into the world of stones.
The canyon is the result of disintegration and erosion. Since the Ice Age, about 15,000 years ago, and over several geological eras, the rio delle Foglie has buried a stretch of about 8km of itself, reaching a depth of 400m in places. It was unearthed layer after layer, with the removal of 10 billion tonnes of stones which were transported to the Adige valley. Today the layers can be leafed through, just like a book.
