On the eastern side of colle Giove, where Santarcangelo di Romagna (RN) is located, are the grotte pubbliche Ruggeri: these 160 caves of mysterious origin form a bona-fide underground city on three levels.
There is still much discussion about the use of these man-made hypogea, dug out of the sand and clay: it is thought that a large part was created for use as storerooms, warehouses or cultural purposes. During WWII the caves were used as refuges for the city’s residents and, during that time, were connected to each other. The imposing public cave is very picturesque.
