Inaugurated in 1996 on a plot of 9,000 sqm, the new seat of the Bruno Salvadori Regional Library in Aosta, designed by architect Gianni Debernardi, stands on a site of archaeological interest. The modern glass structure nestles against the 17th century residence of the nobleman Boniface Festaz and the ruins of the medieval Charitable Hospice. Ruins of the Roman-era porta decumana can be found in the basement.
A modern conference room, with 78 seats, replaced the ancient Chapel of the Charitable Hospice. The surrounding area is used for temporary exhibitions. The light-filled structure also houses study rooms and computer stations.
The library comprises: sections for lending (books, audiobooks); encyclopaedias, dictionaries, periodicals and works about Valle d’Aosta available for consultation; a children’s section with books, comics and music; and the “fonovideoteca” which has audio-visual works (music CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes).
