The present-day appearance of the Fortress of Bard is due to a reconstruction that took place between 1830 and 1838 after Napoleon destroyed the previous defensive fortification; it comprises three main buildings which are situated on different levels and linked by a road, with a total of 238 rooms.
This strategic position was the site of military structures for centuries. Opera Ferdinando, on the lowest level, is a tenaille (pincer-shaped) structure formed of two buildings. Above it, are the Opera Mortai and adjacent polveriera. Opera Vittorio stands halfway up the hill, below the uppermost level which holds the most imposing of the three buildings. Encircled by a boundary wall, this encloses the Opera di Gola with courtyard and the Opera Carlo Alberto, with 24 prison cells.
The Fortress today belongs to the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta and houses the Museum of the Alps in addition to temporary exhibitions and educational workshops.
