Piazza Émile Chanoux in Aosta bears the name of a martyr of the Aostan Resistance. The piazza was originally named for Carlo Alberto and, before then, was occupied by a monastery which was demolished in the early 1800s to create the town hall. It is rectangular in shape with the longer sides laid out on the north-south axis. The coloured flagstones are arranged in geometric designs.
On the piazza are the neoclassical town hall with a richly decorated façade, and portico which houses the Caffè Nazionale, a local institution established in the mid-1800s. Next to it is the Hôtel des États, which once housed the seat of the Assemblea degli Stati Generali and is today used for temporary exhibitions. The rest of piazza Chanoux, also known as the “living room of Aosta”, is enclosed by ancient elegant residences, including art deco maison Frassy.
